Hello and welcome to my technology blog's 50th ever article! Yes since its launch on the 10th of August 2009, it has now had 50 posts. Just to make this post a little more special, I have put a big golden 50 at the top! What better for the 50th article to be about, than a positive sign, that shows how well my blog is doing.
This article is about PageRank™ (PageRank is TradeMark of Google), which is Google's way of measuring how useful/valuable a site is to potential visitors. The higher the PageRank, the higher the value of the site. Surprise surprise, Google rates itself (www.google.com) 10/10. This means that is is amoung the top few sites on the internet. At the other end of the scale is 0/10. It doesn't take a genius to work out that this is basically the worst PageRank. PageRank can be seen on the Google toolbar, or as an extension in Google Chrome.
Generally Google ranks the homepage of a site the highest, as this is usually the most important. Therefore users can get a pretty good idea of how high Google rates the site, by going onto the homepage and looking at the PageRank. Domain age used to be an important factor in PageRank, but it would seem that this is now irrelevant to Google, as my new technology blog which was only launched a few weeks ago has recently got a PageRank 2!
The big gold 50 at the top of the page isn't just to celebrate 50 posts though, it is also to celebrate my new PageRank too!
So what does this mean? Well you may think that 2/10, that's not very good at all! Well it would appear that way, however for a site like mine that has only just been launched, that is extremely good.
If you get 0/10 it ether means that that perticular page on your site is not very valuable, or if it is the homepage, it means the site is not very valuable, 2 however is very strong. Only the top webites that almost everyone is using get 7's, 8's, 9's and 10's so 2 is a very respectable rank for my blog.
Not only my blog has seen an increace in PageRank, but my website has too. My website was a 2 for around half a year, however it then dropped down to a still respectable one for about a year. Now finally it has climed up to an extremly respectable 3! It is only really businesses and big organisations that get 3 and above, (in my view - with exceptions) so for my one person website to get 3/10, I am utterly thrilled.
Over the next few days I hope to post some articles which explain PageRank in more detail, and telling you how to increace your PageRank.
