Google's Empire
Google is an internet giant. There is no disputing that fact, it is everywhere. In this article I hope to open your eyes, to just how big this search engine company really is.
Lets first take a look at Apple, they also have a wide range of products and services. iPod, QuickTime, iTunes, Apple TV, iPhone, MacBook, et cetera.
Now lets look at Microsoft, they, like Apple and Google, also have a wide range of products and services. Windows OS, Internet Explorer, Windows Mobile, Microsoft Office, Xbox, MSN, et cetera.

Apple are tuned in to a very nice market though, with most of their products and services designed for multimedia purposes. For example: the iPod, which is designed for audio and video, QuickTime, which is designed to display images, video and audio.
I also believe that Microsoft only make products which are designed for one real market - the computer market. Yes there is the Windows Mobile, and Xbox, but aside from them, everything else they make is only designed for computer. For example, Internet Explorer, Windows OS, MSN. |
Google is like Microsoft, in the respect that it only designs things for computers, however it doesn't just have things that are only found on computers, many of its products and services also have real life cousins.
Let me explain with some examples:
|
- Google Maps - You could go and look at a real map, but Google makes this much easier
- Google Talk - You could phone someone up, but Google allows you to contact them by typing instead
- YouTube Movie Rental - You could go and rent a movie from a shop, but Google allows you to do this without leaving your seat
- Google News - You could read a newspaper, but Google provides more up to date online news
- Google Calendar - You could go and look at an actual calendar, or in a diary, but Google once again makes this much easier
|
From the examples, I hope you understand what I mean, Google is slowly making its way into more and more areas of our everyday lives.
If someone asked you what Google does, you would naturally start talking about its search engine, however now Google is so much bigger than it was ten years go. Now Google has an empire, and a big one at that.
Below is a list of a handful of Google's products and services, to show you, just how much Google really does.

Google is constantly growing, buying companies and making new features. Considering its entire empire has been build within the last twelve years, I personally think that it has done very well, and currently, I can see no way in which it could be slowed down.
Even if rival companies unite to try and take on the giant of Google, they still can't win. Look at Yahoo and Bing, they have joined together to try and compete with Google, but even the two combined still are not getting anywhere near the percentage of users for their search engines that Google is getting.
Hopefully I have given you an insight into how big Google is, what its "empire" is, and how it now plays such a major part in our everyday lives.
