The World Wide Web

How old do you think the World Wide Web is? You might not have thought it, but it was only invented in 1991, that means it is currently 18 years old. To many of us, it seems like it has always been there, but that not the case.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee introduced the world wide web on August the 6th 1991. Although hypertext was invented many years earlier Mr Berners-Lees invention used hypertext with the internet, to make the world wide web.

There are currently thousands of web server all around the world, storing web data. But it wasn't always like that. In late 1992, there were only 26 web servers, supporting the newly created internet.

By the end of 1995, the internet had around 19000 website's and Microsoft released Internet Explorer. The internet continued to grow, and very soon many of the companies we know today were founded: Ebay (Late 1995), Google (1996), Napster (1999).

Sir Tim is currently director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which is where the basic foundation of the web is, you can also find the online validation service for HTML, CSS and RSS there. If you want to find out more about website validation, please read my website validity article.

So there you go, a brief history of the world wide web. Thanks for reading, I hope this article was useful.
