The Best Ever Scientific Invention

Have guess, at what the public voted the best scientific invention as. Apollo 10? No. Stephenson's Rocket? No. The winner of the public vote was... the X-Ray machine!

Nearly 50,000 people voted in a poll at the Science Museum, and an outstanding one in five people named the X-Ray for having made the greatest impact on the past, present and future.

This was much to the delight of the museums chief curator, who had thought that something more recent would have been voted for, but no, it was medical advances that came out on top.
Stephenson's Rocket

Below is a list of the top ten inventions:
  • 1st place - X-ray machines

  • 2nd place - Penicillin

  • 3rd place - DNA double helix

  • 4th place - Apollo 10 capsule

  • 5th place - V2 Rocket Engine

  • 6th place - Stephenson's Rocket

  • 7th place - Pilot ACE Computer

  • 8th place - Steam Engine

  • 9th place - Model T Ford

  • 10th place - Electric Telegraph

I find it quite amazing that the first three positions were filled by medical inventions or discoveries: the X-ray machine, the discoveries of penicillin and the DNA double helix structure.

The X-ray machine is famous because it provided the first possibility of looking inside someone's body without cutting them open - a huge medical advance.

Professor Andy Adam said that the X-ray machine had revolutionised medical practice, and that the technology had now become so advance that we are now reaching the era of the "transparent patient".
